So, I just realized three days ago that I am not a member of Generation X. Thank God! I've been concerned about this for a long time. In the eyes of some, Gen X is supposed to be the downfall of modern society. Whew....glad I escaped that one. Now I can point the finger at someone else!
Seeing as how we all belong to an era that loves to categorize things (like people), I decided to do some research to determine what generation I belong to. In fact, I am on the very early cusp of a new group of youngsters labeled as "The Millenials". What's our common bond? Well, we're all technologically proficient. We grew up with more than TVs. Since birth (or early childhood) every member of the Millenials has been bathed in a stream of constant information. We get it from TV, the radio, the Internet, email and old-fashioned sources too. To us, technology makes the world tick.
Our inherent high-speed, web-based, broadband, 2.0 outlook on life has turned us into darn good multi-taskers. My daily schedule is a good example. Today I've worked at an elementary school, been grocery shopping, written an email, listened to a podcast, chatted with my little sister online, texted my Mom about something, written a term paper, negotiated the sale of a kayak, and I still have plenty of time to take a jog, hit the weight room, fix supper, go to class and practice the violin. That's not bad, if you don't mind me saying so.
Us Millenials are also really good at competing with one another. Need evidence? Just think about how much more competitive college admittance has become. The "information flood" has made us pretty adept at handling facts and figures. Because so many of us have been to college, we also like to think that we're culturally well-versed. Need another example? Well, one measure of Millenial prowess that I've noticed is how many bands you can be interested in. If you enjoy a band or genre of music that nobody else knows about, then you've earned a gold star. Hot damn, Mr. Millenial man! A subsidiary comparison would be "How many Gigs of music do you own?" I've heard it many times. "Yeah, dude, I got like 50 gigs of music on my computer." Fancy that.
So, in the spirit of Millenial pride and gumption, I'm going to try and post one of my favorite, (most obscure) bands each month. Leave me a post if it's someone that you have actually listened to. Maybe you can help me deal with my swelling Millenial ego.
This month's band is "The Wiyos". Check them out at http://www.thewiyos.com/. I've also put some of their youtube footage at the bottom of the page. Let me know what you think!
